The materials for each RUSKIN are hand selected for their properties and the feelings they elicit. Pure tweed for that textured organic feel. Beautiful, soft Italian leather for it’s, rich grain, texture and colour consistency with distinctive markings that impart unique character. With the varying textures and shadowy furrows, the surfaces are unique to genuine leather and become ever more beautiful with time. The warm, pliable nature of the tweed opens possibilities for modern forms which are mindful of provenance rather than being engineered. These are the details to relish and appreciate that bring integrity and connection to our designs.
At RUSKIN we use the highest quality, completely natural full grain hides for their rich appearance and durable functionality. Each hide is unique and will become more beautiful with time and use. 100% of RUSKIN leathers are sourced inside the EU and are produced with the purpose to minimise their impact on the health of people and the environment during the production phase as well as in the recycling and disposal phases with the tangible benefits being:
lower consumption of water during the various production phases
use of raw materials produced in a sustainable fashion
sound use of resources during the production or disposal phases
absence of harmful effects on the health and the environment because of low of emissions
Our suppliers have been bestowed with the ”Gold LWG Award” in recognition of their excellent ethical, environmental and safety practices in the processing of hides. This seal of approval is awarded by the Leather Working Group who are an official body of experts working together to develop a environmental stewardship protocol specifically for the leather manufacturing industry.
Our tweed can be traced back to a few select farms that have reared the rare, protected breed of Herdwick sheep in the English Lake District for generations.
Production of our tweed takes place in three different mills in Yorkshire. The raw wool is carefully cleaned and combed before being slowly spun into a fine worsted yarn. It is then sent to be woven and washed in natural soap and well water, drawn from below the mill to shrink and interlock the fibres; this enhances the waterproof properties. Since we do not dye or alter RUSKIN tweed in any way, the fabric is finally dried and pressed before being shipped out to Italy.
From rawhide to finished leather and from raw wool to finished tweed each step of our production process is held to the highest standards of environmental impact and ethical production.
